This design is from 1880 featuring the Nine Muses Streets in New Orleans where I have created art and jewelry for ten years.

It is silhouettes of the houses, showing the architectural vernacular - our beautiful side galleries or curved porches, which allowed for the river breezes to flow.

This section of the Lower Garden District was planned by Barthelemy Lafon who intended it to be a sophisticated area lined with trees, markets and parks.

Being a lover of the classics, he named the streets after the nine muses of Greek Mythology: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Euterpe, Polymnia, and Urania

The passage of time is a common thread in the concept of Couvillion's work but it carries through to the aging of the pieces and the richness of the patina.

The natural process of oxidation will add depth and character to the piece, as the patina of time is an anticipated and desired effect in the design. We celebrate the unique interaction between the wearer and the piece that results in surface changes.

Personal body chemistry and amount of wear are factors in determining how rich and distinct a piece will become as it becomes your own. Wear will reveal the shiny metal surface, further connecting the piece to the wearer. The texture of the etching is as much a protective and decorative part for the patina and accentuates design.
